If you want to use Spotify on your iPhone but the lack of 320kbps streaming has always put you off, it looks like you won’t have that reason anymore. Spotify has updated its iOS app with the inclusion of a new streaming quality: “Extreme”. Previously, Low Bandwidth meant streaming in 96kbps, while High Quality was 160kbps. Extreme now lets users stream music in 320kbps. While it’s not the same as listening to FLAC or music from a CD player, it’s definitely an improvement – something that will be noticed with good enough headphones.
Whethever the output setting from Spotify is way to high and saturates, whetever the sound quality is too low. And it's really a shame that it's taking month to fix this. We are not asking for a new very special feature, but just to get what we are paying for properly. The desktop app’s standard quality is Ogg Vorbis 160kbit/s. Premium subscribers can choose to switch on High quality streaming, which uses 320kbit/s. I own the Blood Red Cherry CD that has that song, so I ripped it to WAV and used iTunes to encode it to AAC. Then I used Soundflower to record Spotify, set to high-quality 320kbps audio. For Spotify, the “standard quality” setting on the desktop application, according to Spotify’s website, is 160 kbps, which is known as “high quality” on mobile. On a desktop or laptop, Premium Spotify subscribers can enable “high quality” (320kbps) streaming in the Spotify app’s settings, which is equal to “Extreme Quality.

However, with carriers clamping down on bandwidth and throttling connection speeds, it doesn’t look like a lot of people will be able to take advantage of this update – unless they primarily use Spotify to stream music to their devices at home over WiFi. But hey – it’s always better to have the option to as opposed to not having it at all. Grab the latest version of Spotify from the Apple App Store now. Expect it to arrive on Android and Windows Phone versions of the app in the near future.
